Harbor Wellness opened in a converted sail loft in 2014. Eleven years, one wall-knock-out, and 92,000 classes later — we're still here, still small on purpose.
It started with a Tuesday morning class of four.
Maren Holloway was teaching out of a borrowed dance studio in Salem in early 2014. The class met at 6:30 am — too early for most people, too cold for the rest. Four regulars showed up every week. By July, there were eighteen, and the dance studio politely asked us to find our own room.
That fall, Maren signed a five-year lease on the second floor of an old sail loft on Harbor Lane. The floors were uneven. The radiator only worked on weekdays. The view, though — six tall windows facing east, the harbor below, gulls and rigging and a horizon you couldn't ignore — that was the room. That's still the room.
What we believe
Yoga in America has a noise problem. There are good teachers and there is also a lot of marketing, and the line between them is sometimes blurry. We've tried, from year one, to stay on the right side of that line: small classes, experienced teachers, fair prices, no "wellness journey" upsells, no shame about your hamstrings.
You'll find every style here — vigorous and slow, ancient and modern, secular and traditional. What you won't find is anyone telling you that one of them is the answer. The practice is the answer. The practice is also the question. That's the whole thing.
A community of practitioners, not consumers.
Twelve teachers. Fourteen-hundred members. Two practice rooms — the original sail loft (we call it the East Room) and a quieter, smaller room downstairs (the Garden Room) that opens onto a courtyard in summer.
We don't run teacher trainings. We don't sell supplements. We do offer a workshop a month, two retreats a year, and a sliding-scale community class every Sunday afternoon. We think that's enough.
What we hold to
Practice over performance
We don't take photos in class. We don't post sequences for likes. The mat is for working — not for content. If a teacher asks you to do something for an audience, walk out.
Bodies, not "the body"
Every body is the body in front of us — yours, today, with whatever it's carrying. Modifications aren't a fallback. They're the point of skilled teaching.
Honest pricing
No first-month discounts. No "founding member" tiers. Drop-ins are $24, memberships are $165/month, and Sundays at 4 pm are pay-what-you-can. That's the whole menu.
Teachers, not influencers
Every teacher on our schedule has at least 500 hours of training and three years of teaching. Most have ten or more. We hire for craft and we pay accordingly.
A studio, not a studio brand
We have one location, by choice. We are not raising capital. We are not "scaling." We are running a yoga studio, the way studios used to be run, in one room above a harbor.
Useful traditions
Yoga has a long, complicated history — religious, philosophical, athletic, political. We try to teach it with respect and without spin. If a teacher chants, they explain why. If they don't, that's fine too.
