If you're pregnant in Austin and considering yoga — or you were already doing yoga and aren't sure what's safe now — this post is for you.
What our Prenatal class actually looks like
A 60-minute, low-heat, low-impact class taught by certified prenatal teachers. We move through hip openers, pelvic floor work, supported standing poses, side-lying rest, breath training that translates directly to labor, and a final supported savasana with bolsters under the knees and a blanket if you want one.
We avoid: deep twists, anything that compresses the belly, prone work past first trimester, hot rooms, deep backbends past first trimester, and inversions past first trimester (unless you're experienced and your provider has cleared you).
We focus on: hip and pelvic floor mobility, breath work, strengthening the muscles that hold up your changing body, and rest. Lots of rest.
Trimester by trimester
First trimester: If you're coming early, tell your teacher. Avoid deep twists and stay out of hot rooms.
Second trimester: The "good" trimester. Energy comes back, balance is intact. This is when most of our Prenatal cohort hits its stride.
Third trimester: Things get harder. We modify constantly. Side-lying poses become more common; standing poses get shorter; rest gets longer.
The community piece
Our Round Rock and Pflugerville Prenatal classes have especially tight-knit cohorts — many of whom continue meeting weekly after their babies arrive and bring them to our parent-and-baby workshops.
Your first Prenatal class is free at any Stillpoint studio. Call (512) 555-0136 if you have any safety questions.
